What to expect in your first session

The first therapy session is an opportunity for you and your therapist to get to know one another. The goal of this session is to create a safe and supportive environment where you feel comfortable sharing your thoughts, feelings, and experiences.

Your counsellor will listen attentively as you describe your challenges, symptoms, and the impact they are having on your life.

This is an opportunity for you to talk about what led you to seek therapy and what you hope to achieve through the process. They will ask questions to gain a deeper understanding of your experiences and help you identify specific goals you would like to work on in your future sessions.

How many therapy sessions will I need?

Everybody is unique, and everybody has individual needs. While it is difficult to provide a precise answer, it is best to assume you will require at least 10 sessions.

What are your fees, and can I get a rebate?

Our fees are based on qualifications and experience.

  • Counsellors and Provisional Psychologists: $150 – no Medicare rebate
  • Mental Health Social Workers: $170 – Medicare rebate of $82.30 with a valid Mental Health Care Plan
  • Psychologists: $180 – Medicare rebate of $92.35 with a valid Mental Health Care Plan
  • Clinic Leads: $190 – Medicare rebates may apply depending on qualifications
  • Clinic Directors: $210 – Medicare rebate of $82.30 with a valid Mental Health Care Plan
  • Couples and Relationship Counselling: $220

For clients covered by other insurance:

NDIS

We bill at the rate listed in the NDIS Guidelines. While this is often higher than our standard fee, it helps cover the additional administrative work that is involved with providing NDIS services.

Workcover

You will be required to pay for your invoice in full on the day of your appointment, then claim back from your Workcover insurer. Rates vary between Practitioners based on qualifications and experience. A gap may apply in some cases. Not all Practitioners are registered as Workcover providers.

TAC

You will be required to pay for your invoice in full on the day of your appointment, then claim back from TAC. Rates vary between Practitioners based on qualifications and experience. A gap may apply in some cases.

Private Health Insurance

It is up to you to claim a rebate for yourself following your session. Please note that not all policies will cover Mental Health, and your Private Health Fund may not provide rebates for all of our Practitioners. If you plan on claiming through Private Health Insurance, you may contact our office for some general advice, however, we will not be held responsible for any outcomes regarding your claim.

Letters or Reports

These are billed at the Practitioners standard hourly rate per hour of work, plus GST. The amount of work that goes into letters or reports is dependent upon the nature of the request. All letters and reports must be paid for in full before work commences on them. Please note, you are required to have attended a minimum of three sessions with Safe Place Therapy within the last three months before a Practitioner is able to write any letters or reports for you. All letters and reports will be based on the Practitioner’s professional opinion, and we will not include or omit any details that do not match with their view.
