What to expect in your first session
Starting therapy can be a daunting experience, but it can also be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. The first therapy session is an opportunity for you to get to know your therapist, and for your therapist to get to know you. The goal of this session is to create a safe and supportive environment where you feel comfortable sharing your thoughts, feelings, and experiences.
In the first therapy session, your counsellor will discuss confidentiality with you. This is an important aspect of the therapeutic relationship, and it is important to understand what information will be kept private and what information may be shared with others.
Your counsellor will listen attentively as you describe your challenges, symptoms, and the impact they are having on your life. This is an opportunity for you to talk about what led you to seek therapy and what you hope to achieve through the process. They will ask questions to gain a deeper understanding of your experiences and help you identify specific goals you would like to work on in your future sessions.
It’s important to remember that the first therapy session is just the beginning of the therapeutic journey. While it can be a bit intimidating, the goal of the first session is to establish a trusting and collaborative relationship with your therapist. If at any point during the session you feel uncomfortable or have questions, it’s perfectly okay to speak up and express your concerns.
Although your first session with a counsellor might feel daunting, please remember that we are here to help you on your journey to find your better self.
Policies and procedures

We do take all matters of feedback and complaints very seriously at Safe Place Therapy. Should you have any issues you would like to raise, you may do so with your counsellor, or by contacting our Administrative Team at admin@safeplacetherapy.com.au, or by calling 03 7049 4970. All feedback and complaints are addressed confidentially and with utmost care and consideration.
We have a strict 2-business day cancellation policy. Any cancellation or rescheduling requests must be received by SPT Admin before 9am on the morning that the cancellation policy takes effect. A fee equivalent to the full session fee will be charged if cancelling or rescheduling within 2-business days of an appointment. All late cancellation fees must be paid within 7 days of issue or will be forwarded for debt collection. Late cancellation will only be waived in exceptional circumstances.
Mental Health Care Plan
If you have been given a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) or referral from a GP or a Psychiatrist, please upload a copy here prior to your appointment.
