Experience
Stephanie is a provisional psychologist and La Trobe trained art therapist with a particular interest in neurodiversity and disability throughout the lifespan. Her previous roles have included community and aged care settings where she utilised art therapy and group activities to improve her client’s mood and increase their social connection.
At Safe Place Therapy, Stephanie focuses on supporting children [8+], adults, and older people through a range of difficulties including:
- anxiety,
- depression,
- perfectionism,
- ADHD,
- Autism, and
- navigating changed levels of ability.
Following diagnoses of ADHD and an autoimmune condition in adulthood, Stephanie has developed a passion for fellow neurodivergent individuals, including the ADHD and/or Autistic communities, as well as those struggling with disability, stigma, or changing levels of ability through illness or burnout. Stephanie hopes to utilise her lived experience to encourage and support others through their individual journeys and towards self-acceptance.
Approach
Stephanie focuses on establishing a comfortable and inviting space for her clients using a person-centred, strengths-based approach. She observes a culturally responsive and neurodiversity-affirming practice and utilises CBT and art therapy in her sessions. Art therapy can be particularly helpful for clients who find one-on-one therapy uncomfortable or confronting.
With a neurodivergent therapist, any fidgeting/stimming, avoidant eye contact, or other safe methods of self-soothing are welcome, and Stephanie will endeavour to adjust the therapy approach to suit your needs and your goals.
Stephanie aims to make therapy more accessible and less daunting by bringing her authentic self into the therapy room and meeting the client as they are.
Children and Young People
Please note: The first session for a new client under the age of 16 is to be with the caregiver/s only. This allows for the open discussion of background information and details of the presenting issue/s prior to Stephanie meeting the client. Please call or email Safe Place Therapy to arrange an appointment.
When working with young people, Stephanie utilises art therapy to provide structured play and engaging activities focused on encouraging self-expression and building self-confidence. While these sessions might not look like traditional therapy, they enable young clients to develop skills in a safe, friendly environment.
